Does your dog inhale dinner in about ten seconds flat? It's common — but fast eating isn't just a funny quirk. Gulping food carries real health risks, and the fix is easier than you'd think.

Why do dogs eat so fast?
Speed-eating often comes from instinct (in a litter, the fastest eater got the most), past scarcity, or plain excitement. Whatever the cause, the goal is to make mealtime slower and more deliberate.
The risks of gulping
- Choking and vomiting. Food swallowed in chunks can come right back up.
- Bloat (GDV). In deep-chested breeds, gulping air with food can contribute to bloat — a life-threatening emergency. This alone is reason to slow things down.
- Poorer digestion. Food that isn't chewed is harder to digest.
How to slow your dog down
- Snuffle mats. By scattering food into fabric, a snuffle mat makes your dog find and eat one piece at a time — turning a 10-second meal into 10+ minutes. It slows eating and adds mental enrichment.
- Slow-feeder bowls. Bowls with ridges make your dog work around obstacles.
- Portion in smaller amounts. Feeding part of a meal at a time helps with the most determined gulpers.
- Hand-feed or use puzzles. Great for bonding and pacing.

For most dogs, a snuffle mat is the simplest, most enjoyable fix — it solves the speed problem and tires out a busy brain at the same time. We make two: the full-size PuzzlePup Snuffle Mat and the foldable Smart Snuffle Mat.
Frequently asked questions
Is it bad if my dog eats too fast?
Yes — it raises the risk of choking, vomiting, and (in some breeds) bloat, so it's worth slowing down.
What is bloat?
Bloat, or GDV, is a sudden, life-threatening condition where the stomach fills with gas and can twist. Eating fast and gulping air is one contributing factor. If your dog has a swollen belly, is retching without producing anything, or seems distressed, treat it as an emergency and call your vet immediately.
Do slow feeders really work?
Yes — snuffle mats and slow-feeder bowls reliably stretch out mealtime and are an easy, low-cost fix.
