If your dog's coat looks dull or they're shedding and scratching, omega-3s are one of the most researched, dog-parent-loved ways to help — from the inside out. Here's the plain version.
What are omega-3s?
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats dogs can't make on their own, so they have to come from diet. The most useful for dogs are EPA and DHA, found in fish oil and salmon (and, in a form dogs convert less efficiently, flaxseed).
What omega-3s support in dogs
- A healthy skin barrier and skin moisture
- A softer, shinier coat
- Less dryness and flaking
- A normal, balanced inflammatory response
- Overall wellness (they're studied for joints, heart, and more)
EPA, DHA, and where they come from
Fish oil (and salmon) is the gold standard because it delivers EPA and DHA directly. Flaxseed provides ALA, which dogs convert to EPA/DHA only in small amounts — useful as a complement, not a replacement.

How we use omega-3s in PuzzlePup
Our Skin & Coat Soft Chews combine an omega-3 blend with biotin and zinc — chosen to support the skin barrier and a glossy coat from the inside out, in one daily chew. Coat changes take time as new fur grows in, so give it 4–8 weeks of daily use.

Omega-3s are generally very safe and widely used. Very high doses can loosen stools or interact with some conditions or medications — so dose appropriately and check with your vet if your dog has a health issue.
Questions dog parents ask us
How long until I see a shinier coat?
Most owners notice a softer coat and less shedding within 4–8 weeks of daily use.
Fish oil or flaxseed — which is better for dogs?
Fish oil, because it provides EPA and DHA directly; flaxseed is a helpful complement.
Can I give omega-3s with other supplements?
Usually yes — they pair well with daily routines. Check with your vet if combining several products.
